The Garden Room, Said Business School, Oxford, UK

Dixon Jones Ltd

Dixon Jones’ competition winning design for the first phase of the Said Business School was completed in 2001. The practice was later commissioned to design the second phase which was completed in 2012. The new Garden Room extension was completed in 2017.

The Saïd Business School since its opening has experienced a significant growth of student numbers year on year. To meet the demand for more accommodation the new Garden Room extends the existing dining facility to provide a further 50 seats and provide a new dining space with greater connectivity with the garden.

The extension is situated on the North of the Phase 1 building and next to the site of the scheduled monument Rewley Abbey. The design creates a simple and lightweight structure which limits the impact on the garden and maintains natural light into the existing dining room. It relates to the shift in geometry of the elevation to Rewley Road and the non-orthogonal facade of the dining room by overlapping the corner of the existing building and integrating with the garden wall.

The standing seam roof was carefully detailed and incorporates flush automatic opening roof lights and a full length copper gutter with down pipe.

If the copper roofs on both Phase 1 and 2 perform a civic role contributing to the city skyline, the new extension uses the same pre-patinated copper to give the dining room a distinctive garden character.
