King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Architects Snøhetta’s design for the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, was conceived as an assembly of massive monolithic rounded stones, each a component with a dedicated function and character. Components below ground – including the archives and the museum – focus on the past, while those at ground level are anchored in the present and the Knowledge Tower soars upward into the future.

At the heart of the Center, the Great Hall will house international touring exhibitions, festivals, conferences and events, and is considered to be a ‘window on the world’. Its smooth naturalistic external form is mirrored inside with a gently curved copper skin defining the vast open space. The continuous bands of copper have been perforated to let in light, creating a warm, desert night-sky.
