French Town Closes the Door on Germs with Copper
In a world first, Bezannes – a town in Northern France – has installed antimicrobial copper door handles and stair rails in its city hall, social welfare institution and cultural centre, as well as a primary school.
These hygienic surfaces will help protect the health of everyone using the facilities, and are intended as a symbol of the town’s readiness to innovate and improve.
Copper and the Home 2016 is the latest iteration of a well-established design competition calling on designers to take fresh inspiration from the red metal and its alloys.
Sponsored by Istituto Italiano del Rame (Italian Copper Institute) and the European Copper Institute, the International Copper and the Home Competition invites professional and student designers to reinvent everyday objects with copper, celebrating and exploiting the aesthetic and technical strengths of the metal and its alloys.
