School restaurant in Tourcoing, France

LA*

Due to a lack of space on its own estate, the retrieval of a public garden had to take place, and thus emerged the necessity of preserving a significant vegetal presence.  An interstitial garden first definines...the place.

It starts between the new structure and the street and then it is protected by a railing adorned by a finely chiselled ART NOUVEAU inspired motif. Then it stretches, and meddles with the pre-existent school buildings and the new construction, thus recovering an interiority. Pontoons displayed at the proximity of the existing classes allow an interesting appropriation by the children of this ‘‘cosy corner’’

The next essential component of these premises is the heterogeneous nature of the nearest context with urban elements of very different scales. The unitary volume of the extension then offers differents aspects to go and meet  the environment.

It evolves within a mimetic connection with the environment: It is quite high and adorned with copper  in front of the street to enhance the new entrance sequence to the school.

In opposition to this, it is low and overlaid with bricks when it gives on to the ‘‘courée’’ of a small adjacent street, It thus adopts a more ordinary facade.

Lastly, it is of a reduced height and coated with wood onto the garden interstice. It consecuently exhibits a warm and homely aspect.

The restaurant of the Pasteur school is clad with copper all over its urban part where the building has got a strong presence in the surrounding built area.
We selected the traditional standing-seam coated Tecu copper laid on a ventilated  wooden support

At the moment, the setting is in progress and the few last square miles will be completed in June 2013.
