This building has meant reformation and enlargement of the existing pavilion built in the 1970’s that had a central arena. The new sports pavilion renews all its facilities from a multi-sports central arena, new changing rooms and services to a spectator capacity of 2000 people. The building is sited in a green corridor within the city, in a large park known as the Turó del Castell d’en Planes, that links it to the rest of the city’s sports district. The surroundings of the green corridor and the row of hills together with the necessity to cover a large space, made for the proposal of the construction of a large roof and façades that adopted the inclined lie of the land, the colours of the surroundings and had the sensation of a vibrant and changing skin, an aspect that the use of a patinated copper façade with raking joints offered. This copper façade is anchored to the ground by means of a fair-faced concrete skirt that extends itself with flying ramps that descend folded against one another to the ground. A large overhanging curtain wall, situated in the main façade, allows for an open relationship between the arena and the spectator terraces with the outside, while presiding over the space that has been converted into the grand foyer of the sports stadium. The curtain wall with its horizontal joints is framed by the copper façade and includes various protruding bays closed with glazing similar in colour to the patinated copper, such that the whole assembly acquires a dynamic quality.
