The Lake House, Balatonszepezd, Hungary

András Krizsán architect

The building is located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, right on the waterfront. The colorful and spectacular water world is bordered by old willows, reeds and fishing piers, running above the water surface.

The always changing color of the lake is sometimes blue, sometimes bottle-green, or grey like the storm, or even has a brown tone. Full of silk, fog, vapor and light. Water and sky often melts into one waved blueness in the landscape. The image of the lake house evokes this atmosphere, with the arched shape of the roof and the aquamarine pre-patinated copper facade. The building follows the traditional values of the upper middle class’s villa with contemporary architectural assets, and gives reality and meaning to the architectural culture of the surrounding landscape. The roofs over the terrace are having not only defending and shadowing function, but they are connecting the tactile geometry of the building with the further horizon. This makes by the junction of water and land, in the light rays of the sun, glinting on the metal consoles, a complete lake house.

The mass of the building consists of two perpendicular part, which are connected by a pergola covered patio on the ground floor. The floor plan organization is simple and orients to the guesthouse function. The sleeping and serving rooms are on the first floor and the community space, the kitchen and the dining room are located on the ground floor. The orientation of the house is ideal for utilize the passive solar energy. The building technology is environment-friendly, whit modern doors and windows, exterior sun blinds and insulated wall construction. The ground-source alternative power generation ensures, that the maintenance of the building is cost efficient and can be operated almost autonomously. By the opinion of the Architect’s Board, the house facing to the waterfront means a new quality compared to the surrounding buildings, and makes a positive change on the lakeside.
