Kashubian Philharmonic Hall, Wejherowo, Poland

Arch-Studio

Kashubian Philharmonic Hall with Culture Center is located in Wejherowo at the intersection of Haller Str. and Sobieski Str. in the part of the city named Old Town.  Based on a rectangular plan building has a diverse number of stories and a full basement.

When creating an architectural vision of the object designers relied on four ideas that are a consistent of  investor requirements:

  • monumentality
  • reference to the classic ancient buildings
  • region and city integrity with the Baltic Sea
  • elements of Kashubian culture

Design of the building is based of two blocks:

1. Concert hall / multipurpose hall  along with service rooms

2. Art workshops rooms along with ceramic and sculpture room, photography room, meeting room, ballet, choir and theater rooms and management of  Cultural Centre.

All of these blocks are linked together functionally. Separate entrances are a crutial part of design so these parts of a building can operate independently of each other.

The main core of the building is a concert hall, also could be adapted for theater performances, cinema, conferences, and audio-visual presentations. Designed on a rectangular shape object has a boat hull that seems to be emerging from the glass hall, symbolizing that way the close relationship of Wejherowo with the sea.

The material used to trim the sides is a pre-oxidized copper.

The body of the "boat" is made of vertical panels of copper sheet cladding attached to the plywood shell.

Copper is present in interior design items as well, combined with stone finish and glass adds the object monumentality and increases its rank. The hallways were decorated with copper rustication, in the main hall staircase components are finished with copper, such as was used on the sides of „boat”

In the basement interior design there are decorative pieces of copper sheets in front of the theater studio. All external flashings are made of copper sheet.

New quality of architectural solutions and the usage of high quality materials should definitely add, along with prestigious function of the building, a new value to the urban area of the city.
