The idea was to build a front garden wall in front of the existing building from the 1970s out of copper. The new entrance buildings and the bistro unfold themselves out of this small wall.
The bistro serves the tourists who are visiting the Berlin Wall Memorial. The one new entrance building provides the hotel, which is inside the existing building, with a great reception hall. The second entrance is for the hotel restaurant.
The existing building has been totally reconstructed and is now containing a 38-room 3-star-hotel.
The bistro and the two new entrance buildings are constructed as prefabricated massiv wood panels and are covered with insulation which is cladded with TECU-Classic-Copper rhombes. The material connects the project with the Corten-Steel-Wall of the Berlin-Wall-Memorial.
Inside the buildings the wood panels are visible. The windows have been constructed as aluminium structures. Also the small walls are clad with copper and can be used as benches.
To avoid gaps between the copper plates we developed a fold technique with the construction company. The copper plates are used like a chain armour for the wooden building, it is wrapped with copper.
