Gorey Civic Offices and Library, Ireland

Hall Black Douglas Ltd

With its narrow streets and simple vernacular buildings; Gorey embodies the archetypical Irish crossroads market town, and the scheme has been deliberately crafted to respond to these characteristics. This new Public Square will be the first major public space within the town and is unquestionably the focal point of the scheme.

The Square strives to realise the potential of the site to create an informal, democratic environment; a place for learning, teaching and community involvement.

The centre piece on the square is the new Civic Centre, which house’s offices, council chamber, meeting rooms and Library. The building opens up unto the  square with a  large double height glazed foyer giving transparency and welcome. The library which further links views to the town and historic church is north facing and is flooded with soft natural light.

Materials were carefully selected to define the function of the building with granite, copper, glass and timber bringing a contemporary and civic atmosphere to the scheme.  The long pre-patinated copper wall to the office wing is a bold statement which has been designed to be visible from various points across the town. Careful attention to detail was imperative due to the simplicity & clean lines of the building which in turn has provided a high quality landmark site. The openness of the buildings and the facility has given the site a vibrancy & broken down barriers to the perception of activities within.

The building uses wood chip boilers, air ducts, is entirely naturally ventilated, and is controlled by a BMS system.
