The Curve, Teesside University, UK

The Curve was a competition winning design to renew the heart of Teesside University’s campus. It is now the University’s centre piece and has been a generative spur in the neighbourhood, which is part of Middlesbrough Town Centre, providing a sustainable nucleus for both the University and the local community. 

The new building’s teaching block and 200-seat auditorium are expressed by a curved facade that wraps around the north, south and east elevations, embracing the western end of the ‘Campus Heart’. Expressing each of the building’s elements separately creates a bold and striking composition. The lecture theatre ‘floats’ at first floor level allowing the ‘Campus Heart’ landscape to flow seamlessly into the atrium, providing vibrant social spaces, a forum for exchange of ideas and an inclusive ethos. Where the teaching block cuts back at ground level, a triple height concourse is formed from fully glazed curtain walling.

The desire for an identifiable, landmark building that is fresh, exciting and unique suggested we should be bold in our choice of materials. The golden copper alloy gives the building a jewel like quality and a hand crafted finish that easily forms the curved wall surfaces and shaped window reveals.

It is important to us that our buildings are sustainable and age gracefully. The sustainability credentials of copper alloy were crucial and the inherent qualities of maintaining its appearance (copper alloy does not develop a green patina) will ensure The Curve maintains its high-quality appearance with negligible maintenance.
